From Old French cipres (French cyprès), from Ancient Greek κυπάρισσος (kupárissos), probably from an unknown Mediterranean Pre-Greek language; compare Hebrew גֹּפֶר(gōp̄er), the name of the tree whose wood was used to make the ark (Genesis. vi:14).
